Eye surgeries

Many eye surgeries that have long been common in humans are now also performed on animals. There are now a number of veterinary specialists in ophthalmology (=ophthalmologists).

Areas of application

Possible reasons for eye surgery include conditions such as:

  • Glaucoma
  • Cataracts
  • Periodic eye inflammation (ERU, equine recurrent uveitis)
  • Eyelid malformations and injuries
  • Corneal injuries
  • Lens luxation (= lens displacement)
  • Foreign bodies
  • Tumors

Implementation

A distinction is made between surgery on the outer and inner eye. Different surgical techniques may be used depending on the condition.

Surgery on the inner eye requires particular precision and special technical equipment. As the eye is made up of very small structures, magnification techniques are also required. Almost all eye surgery on animals is performed under general anesthesia.

Aftercare

Good aftercare is essential for a smooth healing process. It is important that the freshly operated eye is very well protected. To ensure this, dogs and cats should wear a neck collar and horses should wear an eye protection mask. The affected eye often needs to be treated with ointments or drops after the operation.
